M. Basic
Basic scored the best ranking of his career exactly two years ago when he was the 109th tennis player in the world. At the tournament in Sofia he arrived as the 129th tennis player in the world and in the current season he recorded two wins and one defeat. Of course he booked that before the appearance at the tournament in Sofia, so that the statistics after this tournament will of course be a little better. Basic did not win an ATP title in his career and did not participate in any of the ATP tournaments.
He had one of the better appearances of his career at the beginning of the year, when he moved into the quarter-finals over the qualifications and was overplayed by the Argentine G. Pella. After this very good result, a catastrophically bad match followed in the first qualifying round for the Australian Open against A. Gonzalez, the 354th tennis player in the world. Last but not least, we also mention the very good performance in last season’s final, when Basic went through qualifications to the semifinals of the tournament in Moscow, where he was defeated by compatriot D. Dzumhur.

M. Merterer
Merterer is a young German tennis player, from whom one expects much in the near future. The German just reached in the current season, the best ranking of his career and indeed the 82nd position of the ATP World Ranking. Like his opponent today, Merterer did not win an ATP title, and the season started with an unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the main draw at the Doha tournament, where he was defeated in the second qualifying round by M. Berrettini.
A much better result, which was also the best of his career so far, when talking about Grand Slam tournaments, he scored at the Australian Open, where he moved into the third round and after a big fight in four sets of T. Sandgren was beaten. In the second run of the tournament in Sofia he played against J. Sousa, whom he beat in two sets (7: 5 7: 6). The match was, as you can see, very even and the German performed better in both sets in the finish and used every mistake of the Portuguese in his own favor.

Apart from the qualifications, these two tennis players have not yet met in the ATP Tour. Both tennis players have achieved some good results in their career so far. We expect a fairly balanced match, but given all their performances since the season opener, Merterer has a slightly better form and could eventually move into the semi-finals.
